death tied me up with a bright red ribbon

disguise your voice, darling

death’s skulking by your shoulder,

waiting to take your beauty

waiting to take your too-short hair and your

painted nails and

the whispers in your heart

so dig your toes into the sand

feel the ocean with your fingers and

let the strength of millions fuel you

pushing you forward

taste the clouds and feel freedom

forever freedom

never let yourself become entangled in

the bright red ribbon

of your stolen future

but let your lungs keep stretching

let your chest keep squeezing

and let your feet keep running, running

to the future you should have had.

death’s skulking by your shoulder, darling

disguise your voice.
